The Punjabi Diaspora: Spreading Wings Around the World

A diaspora is a scattered population whose origin lies in a different geographic location. In particular, diaspora refers to involuntary mass dispersions of a population from its native territories. Likewise, Punjabi diaspora refers to the descendants of ethnic Punjabi personalities who emigrated out of the Punjab region to the rest of the world.

One of the largest ethnic groups in both the Pakistani and Indian diasporas, the Punjabi diaspora numbers around 10 million, mainly concentrated in Britain, North America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Where Punjabi personalities have a big role in India's GDP, they have a big role in every country they have moved to. They have been accepted by the native people all around the world because of their lifestyle. Just because of some simple facts that every Punjabi is large-hearted, has a funny accent, is a big foodie, arranges incredibly lavish weddings and is obsessed with milk products, Punjabi personalities attract everyone. If you are looking for a good company, look for a Punjabi friend.

Everywhere they go, they leave their mark, a mark to be remembered and everywhere a Punjabi personality has gone, he/she has made organisations spread Punjabi culture and promote Punjabi values.

In 1998, the then Prime Minister of India, Hon’ble I.K. Gujral, launched World Punjabi Organisation (WPO), an international body of Punjabi personalities to bring about a Punjabi Renaissance. The organisation, like most Punjabi personalities, is actively engaged in promoting Punjabi brotherhood, folk and culture to foster social, economic and cultural bondage among the Punjabi Personalities settled across various parts of the world.

World Punjabi Organisation, through its various chapters, regularly organises activities to promote cultural, social, educational, spiritual and also felicitate the Punjabi personalities who have made a significant contribution to the society.
